Working from home and Working Tax Credit
Okay so today I want to talk about something that will only be relevant to readers in the UK; but may interest the rest of you and that is working tax credit.
If you are a single parent with a child in full time education you will now be transferred from income support to job seekers allowance and will be expected to actively seek employment as well as providing evidence of your job search.
Creating your home business can be part of your mandatory job search efforts and in the event that you are offered work from home job opportunities; as long as it is not over 16 hours then your benefit is not affected but make sure you claim any earnings when you sign on.
And if you do perform some work from home assignments then this will give you dome history and feedback on the virtual employment website you are using and increase your visibility to prospective employers.
If you take part in the New Deal employment scheme or New Deal for single parents there is no reason why you cannot opt for self employment under the scheme and present a business plan for your work from home business.
And even if you do not qualify for New Deal you can sign off unemployment and register as self-employed; as long as you are running your work from home business for at least 40 hours per week then you qualify for working tax credits immediately.
Depending on your taxable income over the previous April to April tax year (taxable income includes income support and job seekers allowance) you would be entitled up to:
Single and over 25: you would be eligible for up to £2016.24 for the coming year in Working Tax Credit; paid to you in monthly instalments
Single Parent – one child: you would be eligible for up to £5943 in working tax credit and child tax credit combined
Single Parent – Two Children: you would be eligible for up to £7653 in working tax credit and child tax credit combined
In addition to working tax credit and child tax credit you would still be entitled to up to 100% of your housing benefit and community charge benefit.
Of course as your virtual office develops and your income increases your level of entitlement will change
With this level of support and in a climate where unemployment is still high a virtual office is one of the best options for the unemployed who are finding it difficult to get traditional employment, single parent and those people that are returning to the workforce after a lengthy absence.
Coming this week ….
It’s been a busy week for me in my virtual office and working from home means that home can feel like work sometimes so took a break and spent the aftwernoon in the park.
Some inportant information coming up in the next post for UK residents-
In the UK, if you are a single parent and your youngest child is in full-time education; new rules will mean that you are immediatley transferred to Job Seekers Allowance and must look for work.
You are a perfect candidate for running a virtual office from home and the process does not have to be difficult -
Starting your own virtual office working from home you would be considered self employed and still entitled to housing benefit, community charge benefit and working tax credit —
Come back and check for this new post that will help you make the transition
The Cost of Your Virtual Home Office
In this post I am going to tell you how much it will cost you to run your virtual office — But first let’s just go over a few things in some depth and then I will break down the monthly cost:
If you have read previous posts on this blog and looked at the resource pages then you know all the tools you need to start working from your virtual office.
Now it’s time to act and make sure that you have those tools and have signed up for your Free Membership of all of the employment resources I have mentioned; you need to do this so you make sure you are giving yourself the very best chance to earn money working from home as quickly as possible.
And it does not matter if you want to work from home in the UK, work from home in the USA or work from home absolutely anywhere in the world.
Firstly, you already own a computer and you already have an internet connection; so that business expense has already been dealt with and doesn’t concern you anymore.
You can start working from home for free — It is true that at some stage you will definatley want to have at least one premium membership with an employment site eventually to increase the number of different work from home jobs that you are able to apply for; you should not do this straight away as it’s wise to see which employment site works best for you (in other words, which one you get the most work from) before upgrading any of your free memberships.
However; even with more than one premium membership and hopefully you are succesful enough to need it; being a virtual assistant working from home can always be done with a very cheap virtual office. This is perfect if you have been laid off, are long term unemployed or are a mom looking for work at home jobs for moms that fit into your family schedule.
So let’s look go through that list of stuff that is essential and look at the cost:
File sharing, file exchange and file storage — You will need a way of receiving large files from clients and of course delivering large files to them; email has it’s limits so sign up for a free account with 4shared or Dropbox. Both these resources allow you to send and receive files of up to 500MB at a time and 10GB of storage space — this should be plenty to get you started and keep you going for quite some time before you need to upgrade to a premium membership that gives you 100GB of storage space and the ability to transfer files of 2GB and more.
The month to month cost of either of these file sharing and file transfer options does not exceed $9.99 per month with reductions for annual membership options.
Website and your own domain name and email: Okay you do not need a website straight away but I strongly reccomend that you purchase your desired business domain so that you can at least present a professionial look to your virtual office company; it makes you far more appealing as a virtual assistant to potential employers than if you use a free email account such as Gmail and Hotmail for example.
There are plenty of great deals out there for web hosting and domain name packages with a domain name costing as little as $1.99 and some really great web hosting packages for less than $9.99 a month.
Unlimited phone calls for your virtual office: Having the ability to make phone calls is something that is sometimes taken for granted; but unless you want to use your own home telephone number or pay for an additional landline; a virtual phone system is really the best option — to make actual phone calls from your computer you will need to pay for these; but systems such as Skype and Virtual office phone have domestic and international calling packages that range from $8.99 to $14.99 a month.
Their fair use policy is commonly in the region of 10,000 calling minutes; so ample for the busiest of virtual offices
Other than all these things I have mentioned that involve a cost either now or later on down the road as you build your work from home business are mostly software that you should already have or can acquire with free downloads — all of these are available on the Home office resources page of this site.
Okay so let’s break down that recipe for your virtual office and the ongoing monthly cost of being a virtual assistant earning money working from home.
Broadband or DSL internet — average monthly cost of $39.99
File sharing and file storage — average monthly cost of $9.99 (free account sufficient at start-up)
Domain name and web hosting — average monthly cost of $9.99
Virtual office phone — average monthly cost of $14.99
Virtual employment membership sites — average monthly cost $19.99
So there you have it; no matter whether you are a work from home mom, recently laid off or long term unemployed and want to turn your prospects around; you can be a virtual assistant working from home in your virtual office for less than $100 per month. And if you are on a very tight budget getting off the ground you can even start off and working at home for free
Looking forward to helping anyone that wants to try out being a virtual assistant and I look forward to your comments
So you want to make $45 an hour as a Virtual Assistant working from home?
So you want to make $45 an hour as a Virtual Assistant working from home?
Once you have set up your home office and have all the basic tools you require; such as some web hosting, file storage facility, virtual phone or VOIP and have signed up for free basic accounts on a few of the popular work from home job sites such as Odesk and Elance for example; you are well on your way.
There are many highly qualified and specialised skills out there that command high end salaries; hourly rates of pay that do not differ by much, regardless of whether they are performed in full-time employment or on a freelance and work from home basis.
Unfortunately, although most of us possess an eclectic array of skills and knowledge we don’t all hold the certified qualifications that command high-end salaries positions.
The most abundant type of work at home jobs available to a virtual assistant are those that require basic admin skills — skills that all of us have. The perceived downside there is that those work at home jobs also have the most number of freelancers going for them.
Anyone that has had a desire to be a virtual assistant or has browsed any of the popular websites that advertise work from home jobs and assignments would have found that the payment offered by many employers for basic admin type work at home jobs, ranges from poor to mediocre.
Not ALL but definitely many!
The secret to earning $45 an hour as a virtual assistant working at home is a simple one.
A structured working week, with a set number of hours that you dedicate to work and targeting multiple small projects from multiple employers
Firstly decide on what those skills are that you possess that you will market and apply for assignments that are directly relevant and will be your main focus of work at home jobs that you will apply for. It is around those assignments that you will build your structured working week and earn $45 an hour working from home.
For example your main skill could be blog writing or customer services or telesales or transcription — whatever it is, that is where you focus your energies first and apply for assignments that pay a rate that works out at no less than minimum wage.
Your goal here is to always have sufficient assignments in your main niche that are paying you for every hour you are dedicating to your work from home career.
So that if you have decided to dedicate 8 hours per day, then you have an assignment or assignments that is paying you at least minimum wage for each of those 8 hours.
From there, the trick is to now go for very low impact and low paying assignments (and there are lots of those) which you can perform in tandem with your main daily work.
Some good examples would be email monitoring, online chat support, basic blog commenting, calendar management, bulk email and the list is really endless as there are literally thousands of different simple tasks out there that you can get paid for and attach to your work at home income to accumulate $45 an hour.
Basically, what you need to do is imagine an average working day in an average office anywhere in the world and all the tasks that are performed in that average working day. Imagine the average customer service agent working in any service based company for $15 an hour; what does he or she do in their average working day.
Make and answer fifty telephone calls, read and respond to fifty emails, chase up ten unresolved issues and do any number of other duties they are given during the day; all of that for one employer for $15 an hour.
Add up all the tasks you do in the office, the emails you write and end, the calls you make and receive, the memos and letters you type; if you make $100 a day and perform 200 tasks in that day, then you are being paid 50 cents for each thing you do at work.
So think about that when you see assignments like email monitoring for $2.00 an hour or provide online customer service support for $3.00 an hour; don’t just skip past it in disgust, think about it first.
How many emails are there likely to be in an hour?
How many online support requests will there be?
The answer is usually one or two an hour on a busy day because the overwhelming majority of these kinds of work at home assignments are for small companies that want to pay a small amount of money for the support just being there; rather than there being a whole lot to do.
What you should be thinking is; at $2.00 an hour for email monitoring as long as there are no more than 4 an hour it’s no different for what I would be paid for that task in a regular employed position.
The right and positive thing to be thinking is that you are being paid $2.00 an hour for just being there just in case; when, let’s face it, if you are working from home then you are sitting there anyway.
So why lose out on $2.00 an hour — $16 a day — $80.00 a week for sitting in a chair by your PC in your home office; which is where you would be anyway if that money was there or not.
And . . .
There is no reason why you cannot be doing five assignments exactly like that for five different employers all in tandem with each other and your main niche assignments.
Do not focus on the payment for each individual task you perform during your working day in your home office and focus on what you end up in the bank with at the end of the week or month.
You don’t work out your salary like that in a regular employed position; based upon each thing you do. You just look at your pay-check at the end of the week and know that’s what you have been paid for that time at work.
This is an example of how you can structure a 30 hour week as a virtual assistant working from home — it’s based on actual assignments that I was doing within two months of setting us as a virtual assistant working from home.
It comes out at $1090 a week — just over $36 an hour; so I hadn’t quite achieved the $45 an hour target by then; but it did show me very quickly though that a disciplined structure and multiple low impact projects gave me a good income without the stresses and strains of the corporate rat-race
Posting 50 simple one or two line blog comment $25 per week X 4
Manage and approve posts on my blog $30 per week X 1
Manage and approve posts on my blog $25 per week X 1
Submit 10 pre-written ads to Craigslist daily $20 per week X 3

Email customer support — 6 hours per day $65 per week X 2

Audio Transcription $135 per week X 1
Opinion and survey sites $50 per week
If you think you are able to be organized and have good time management then you can easily attain your desired income by working from home.
Try the method for yourself and you will see that it’s all down to logistics – managing a mixture of different things that can be done in tandem with each other — try it for yourself
Blogging Espionage… Honest Review!
So Blogging Espionage has just launched and there’s uproar in the industry already…
What Is This Secret New Method?
Well, I was lucky enough to secure an early copy of the system so I could review it for Rob (the creator) and it I must say it’s unlike anything else on the market.
The site, although it seems like hype is honest and true… This isn’t about any of the usual methods like Adwords, PPC, SEO, Media Buying, CPA, Ebay, Article marketing or the likes.
No… This is something I hadn’t heard about and I’d happily join Rob and bet you haven’t heard of this strategy for making money before.
Now I got access to just 3 days before the launch and one of Rob’s team told me that if I do this right away I’d actually make money before the launch.
Yeah right?
I wanted to give it a go so I’ve spent 3 hours per day working on this and this is now the 4th day… Blogging Espionage launched yesterday.
The Results…
Well it’s a pleasent surprise. I’ve actually made $803 and I could easily turn this into $5,000 by the 7 day mark using the further steps in the system.
I didn’t expect this but I can honestly say this is the one product I’d recommend 100% if you need money fast and don’t want to wait months for results.
Now, there are only a limited number so it may have sold out by now but if not then grab a copy while you can.
Just click below:
Is there any point to Survey & Opinion sites?
I get asked a lot of questions about on-line survey and market research sites, especially when a lot of them ask you to sign-up to trial accounts with companies where you give over your credit casrd details — Okay so let me touch on that first.
It is common for reputable companies to market via an on-line survey and marketing site; firstly and most importantly this is not a scam. You can get some really great cash-back offers on these deals and you don’t have to part with a penny; but what you do have to do is very carefully record and monitor the offers you sign up for.
On all of these types of sign-ups the trial membership is for a limited period of time after which your account becomes confirmed and is charged for the regular membership fee. However when you first complete the trial membership you are given very very very simple instructions in your confirmation email telling you how long the trial membership is for and how to cancel it.
Carefully manage all of these emails and keep them in their own dedicated folder — check the expiration dates of the free trials and set a reminder in your calendar to follow the cancellation instructions two days before that expiration date.
I messed this up once when I lost the confirmation email and forgot all about it and ended up paying two months membership on an online faxing company; but other than that one time that was my fault anyway I have never had any problems with these offers and have had $100′s in payments just from.
Then there are the straighforward surveys where ordinarily you will receive a notification email that a survey is available; sometimes you do not qualify and will not be allowed to participate; and for those that you do qualify for, the payments vary.
So, yes – you can actually earn money for assisting market research companies by completing surveys and signing up for trial memberships in various companies.
You are not going to be able to retire on the revenue but it is not difficult to earn $200 a month for a few hours work. That cash came in very handy indeed when I first started out and even though I have cut back on the number of survey sites I belong too; the one’s that I do maintain still pay the running costs of my home office.
So I would be a fool to thumb my nose at it!
You can check out the paid survey links or browse the income resources page of the site.

See the pointers to scam – firstly they have asked for scanned copies of official documents – never ever do this and second pointer is the really bad English that has been used
How to get started working from home Part Two
What equipment do I need?
The different types of work available to a home-office business is almost unlimited and is certainly equal to the number of tasks performed on a computer by anyone sitting in a cubical or at a desk in any office anywhere in the world.
There are basic equipment and software requirements regardless of the type of assignments you intend to target for your home-office. We will look at those essentials and give recommendations of some great free stuff that will really add value to your home-office business by increasing the number of projects you can apply for.
- PC, Mac or Laptop – Ideally this should be a piece of equipment less than two years old to ensure it has sufficient operating capacity to meet all your needs
- A reliable high-speed broadband/DSL internet connection
Those are the only absolutely vital pieces of equipment you will need to set up your home-office business and start applying for remote jobs and projects. Of course there are other pieces of equipment your home office will need later on and most are already a common component in the most basic of family computer packages.
- Scanner
- Printer
- Fax
Scanners, printers, fax machines and even all-in-one combos are available at all computer stores and these days they are relatively inexpensive. If for any reason you don’t have the funds to invest in equipment right away and all you have is a lap-top and an internet connection; you really can get by with just that for quite some time.
There are few projects and assignments that require you to have the equipment with well over 90% of basic office admin jobs being completely paperless. But if it is a case of getting by until you can get the equipment then you can find the facilities to scan print or fax at most local libraries and internet cafes.
Do I need a website?
I knew you would be thinking about this quite early on; so I will touch on that briefly.
You do not need a website straightaway and not having a website will not stop you from getting work or running your home office business. Your website is something that we will talk about in depth when we discuss your online presence.
However you should get yourself some cheap web hosting – firstly so you can purchase and register your desired domain giving you the domain email that you need to communicate with any employers you get immediatley, using the brand identity you will ultimatley be marketing.
Some freelancers are content with using a Gmail address, but if you intend to build yourself into a recognizable and branded business unit that must be perceptual as well as actual; so identity is important.
And of course once you have all the physical elements of your home based office business set-up you are then ready to work on your website straight away as soon as you ready. I will talk about structuring your website in later posts; but for now purchase a domain name at the very least – there is a button link to a good provider that I use myself on the right of the page.
Okay, so now to look at the software other essential resources you will need . . .
- An office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and all those capabilities you would associate with the likes of office software suites such as Microsoft Office, Works and Corel; to name a few.
It is highly recommended that you also take advantage of an open source software suite such as OpenOffice which can read and write files from all the other office software programs; it is completely free of charge and can be found at http://www.openoffice.org/
- As many of the popular instant messengers as possible – i.e. Yahoo Messenger & Windows Messenger
- A Skype account – Skype is a free software application that allows you to make free voice and video calls to other Skype users – There are also very reasonable packages available where you can make telephone calls to landlines and cell phone numbers worldwide as well as being able to purchase your own Skype telephone number – you can even choose the area code you want.
It is fast becoming the preferred method of communication by employers; the free aspects of Skype to Skype communication, the low cost of calling packages combined with a generous fair use policy set at 10,000 minutes a month also makes Skype a sensible, reliable and inexpensive communication solution for your home office.
Package costs range from $8 to $16 per month depending on whether you want just domestic or international calls; you can also have your own phone number that you can use online or from any Skype compatible own cell phone.
The maximum annual cost for a Skype phone number and unlimited international phone calls is $242 – this is cheaper than many of the regular phone and cable companies.
But to start with all you need is to actually download the Skype application at http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/get-skype/on-your-computer/windows/
You will only need to consider one of the calling packages once you start applying to projects that require make and receive phone calls
- File storage, File back-up and File transfer are all functions that you will need to have readily available on an ongoing basis. You have to remember that all the files on your computer, both your personal files and clients work in progress and completed work that is ready for delivery are all vitally important; and if anything happens to your computer and that is the only place you have your files stored then you have lost it all.
There are several ways to store and back-up files; the simplest method is to transfer your files to CD or to an external hard drive on a regular basis; or if and when you do have web-hosting there will be generous file storage included in any package.
What you then also have to bear in mind is that, not only do you need some secure storage for your files but you also need to be able to receive files from your employers and be able to deliver drafts and completed work to them.
Most email hosts cannot receive or send files larger than 10MB and you will have to transfer larger files on a regular basis, so you will need a simple and reliable solution.
There are many options on the internet; if you perform a search with phrases such as ‘free file transfer’ of ‘free file storage’ you will find lots of sites where you can sign-up for a free membership. With most of the resources you will find there is always a free membership level that gives you limited use of the service.
Even though most of them offer very generous free file storage space at the basic member level, uploading and downloading files is slow; the faster priority service being reserved for premium membership accounts that pay a monthly or annual fee.
Here are two resources that I strongly recommend as they give the best function and control in the storage and transfer of files at the free basic account level and offer the best value for money at the premium account level should you need to upgrade in the future.
4shared.com is a resource that gives you 10GB of space at the free account level and allows you to share as many files as you want that are no larger than 200MB each. You are able to manage your files via the website or alternatively you can download the desktop application. When sharing of file is selected by you a URL link is created for you to provide to the people you want to give the file; you also have the option of including password protection access to any shared file.
- Upgrading to a premium account will increase your storage space to 100MB and the maximum single file size for transfer to 5GB. The cost is $9.95 per month with discounts available for 3, 6 and 12 month packages
- https://www.dropbox.com/ This resource gives you 2GB of free storage space, but you can increase this by inviting friends and earning an additional 250MB per friend that accepts up to a maximum of 8GB; so 10GB total available with a free basic account. Files are shared by inviting the intended recipient to share the folder that the files are contained in; of course you can create one file for each individual or invite multiple people to a folder for multi person collaboration. Once an invitation to share a file is accepted that person can take delivery of anything that is put in the folder.
There are two levels of premium account – 50GB of storage for $9.99 per month or $99.00 per year or 100GB of storage for $19.99 per month or $199.00 per year.
An additional feature with either of the premium accounts on Dropbox is that you have permanent file recovery; any files that are deleted or removed from any folder that you have created can be retrieved at any time.
Okay so that is everything you need to get started on the task of finding remote jobs and projects and earning your income from your home based office business.
Now you need to know where to find the work, how to construct your application proposals to maximize your success and what viable additional revenue streams there are available to you — I will cover all of that in future posts real soon
How to get started working from Home – Part One
How to get started
Okay, so knowing how to get started is important and it’s basically the same regardless of your circumstances. Your personal circumstances do matter when it comes to how you actually go about doing it, so let’s talk about that a little bit.
It’s important that you know and understand that you are not going to earn money instantly and this is no different to any other business venture. Like anything worthwhile it takes discipline and dedication from you to be successful and you need to be prepared to invest yourself in that discipline and dedication.
But the important bit back there is ‘you are not going to earn money instantly’ How to get started- Just like any other venture there is a period of time between starting and earning.
If you are currently unemployed or are in any personal circumstance where you are not working and are at home; then obviously there is no reason for you not to give 100% of your time and attention to starting and building your home office business right away.
However!
If you are currently in full-time employment you absolutely do not ‘throw the baby out with the bath water’ and give up a stable employed position as soon as you decide that you want to earn your full-time income from a home office.
Never voluntarily leave a full time job until you are satisfied that you have something stable and sustainable to replace it. If you are in full-time employment that means you will be starting up your home based venture around your current obligations, finding home-based assignments and performing those tasks outside of your regular working hours.
The more time you devote to finding home-based work assignments and building your business, the quicker your virtual office will provide the income you desire. There are only so many hours in the day and if you already have a full-time job it may take a little longer getting to where you want to be than if you did not already have full-time obligations.
For those of you that don’t have any obligations outside of the home; you have the opportunity to focus and dedicate a great deal more time on getting your virtual office business started, acquiring work assignments, building your client base and building your income to your desired levels.
You’re Business Plan!
Having a business plan is vitally important to your success; without a plan to follow you really are just making it up as you go along and simply planning to fail.
The business plan is an important document and it’s something that you need to study and be diligent with it; especially if you ever want to use it to open your business bank account or apply for any future business credit.
But right now you really just want to know what it’s going to take to start your home-based office business and working toward your desired income as soon as possible.
But because it is so important, constructing your business plan is something I want to handle with it’s own page and prepare some cool templates and a couple of ready made examples for you to tailor to your own needs
— So look out for that coming soon —
In the meantime I will post part two of ‘How to get started’ as soon as I can and I do look forward to your comments and questions
So You Want to Work From home?
You are doing a job that you just can’t stand and think it would be so much better if you could just do it all from home
You are a stay-at-home mom or dad or tied to the home for any number of reasons and want a flexible way to supplement your income
Maybe you have been laid off
You can make the best of your circumstances and take a shot at being your own boss, running your home based office business
Now, more than ever before, mothers, fathers, single individuals and people in all different types of domestic circumstances are choosing to give up working in full-time employment and work for themselves. Motivations are different, but more freedom is the major motivator with matching and exceeding desired income coming a close second.
The major items you need to get started with a virtual home office and working on telecommuting projects is a computer and a good internet connection. You are reading this, so you must have at least that and therefore you have all you need to start your dream of becoming your own boss.
Whether you work on a checkout desk or are a certified professional there are remote working opportunities out there for you.
Working from home is something that most of us have either thought about or in a lot of cases wished for and for lots of different reasons. The opportunity and availability of being able to earn a reasonable income in your own home without the daily grind of commuting to the office; always being restricted in your family and social life by the regimented regularity and fixed hours of the workplace.
We have all seen the same get rich quick schemes – promises of $100’s an hour and six or even seven figure incomes for doing virtually nothing at all. Giving the impression that there is a magical unlimited source of income to be tapped into that requires no tangible product or service and all you have to do is ask and it’s all yours.
BEWARE OF SCAMS!!!
And there are so many scams out there — I have seen a multitude of work from home blogs and sites that are littered with Adsense; the bots crawl the site and Hey-Presto all those links that many of us are familiar with, making wild promises of earning enough to buy a brand new Mercedes by lunchtime.
I am going to be talking about some great resources out there and some that I don’t use; the reason for that is simple; you simply can’t take advantage of ALL the resources out there and after researching and using them all at one time or another, I have found the handful that work well for me and focus on building on those.
This is why you will not see any random advertising on yourarmchairoffice.com — the minimal banners I have here are ALL resources that I use myself right now and all contribute to my current success and growth
Of course there are other genuine methods and opportunities out there, such as developing a popular blog and applying multiple revenue streams to it like advertising programs, affiliate programs, sponsorship, merchandising and the list goes on.
You’re not going to learn to do that here — This site is devoted to helping you plan and build your home based office business
Whatever your profession or experience level, by following my site and the advice and direction I give you will learn how to achieve your dream of working from your own home, doing the same tasks you do in your regular job, on your own terms. Enjoy being your own boss and the potential of exceeding your average full-time employed income – that’s the hardest part!! – Once you achieve that goal with diversification the sky really is the limit
Check back regularly as I add new pages with resources and useful tools and blog for you; helping you toward home based employment success
